A little adventure at Detling
New faces, familiar treasures and another weekend of learning.
This weekend, we packed up a selection of our favourite vintage finds and headed to Detling Showground in Kent for our first antique fair there, organised by Love Fairs.
Although it was our first time at Detling, it was actually Erkan's third antique fair. And with each one, he's finding himself enjoying the experience a little more!
From online selling to real conversations
Most days at Rare Finds House are spent behind the scenes — finding interesting pieces, researching their history, taking photographs, carefully packing orders and sending little treasures off to their new homes.
Antique fairs bring a completely different side to the business. Instead of seeing a name on an order, we get to meet people face to face, hear about their collections and discover what catches their eye.
Sometimes it's a particular porcelain figure, sometimes an unusual teapot, and sometimes it's simply a conversation about a piece that reminds someone of their childhood.
A stall full of little characters
Setting up the stall is always a bit of a puzzle! We had porcelain ladies, colourful ceramic animals, decorative vases, character jugs and all sorts of curious little finds to arrange.
There's something lovely about seeing everything together rather than individually photographed for the website. Every piece seems to have its own personality.
The people make the experience
One of the nicest parts of these weekends is meeting other traders. There are people who've been doing this for years, each with their own stories, knowledge and way of doing things.
We're still relatively new to the antique fair world, so there's plenty to learn. But that's part of the fun. Every fair brings a little more experience, a few new connections and usually something unexpected.
It's not just about finding new homes for old treasures. It's about the stories, conversations and people along the way.
