This Royal Doulton large character jug is the model known as The Poacher, numbered D6163 and produced in England from the mid-twentieth century. The design reflects the detailed sculpting and hand-painted finish characteristic of Doulton’s Toby and character jug series, with the fish forming the handle and the expressive face modelled in high relief.

The jug is made from glazed ceramic with carefully applied colour variation, and the impressed backstamp confirms Royal Doulton production together with the model identification. These jugs were made in several sizes, and this example is the large version. The piece shows no chips, cracks or repairs, and the glaze remains clean and well preserved.
