Antique Arthur Wood Teapot Pattern 1493 Imari Style Cobalt Floral Gold English Pottery Collectible
Arthur Wood Longport Teapot 1493 Early Twentieth Century Imari Floral Staffordshire Pottery Decorative Teaware
This early twentieth-century Arthur Wood of Longport teapot features pattern number 1493, presented in a richly decorated Imari-style palette of cobalt blue, iron red, white and gold. The underside bears the hand-painted A.W.L. mark together with the pattern number.
The rounded earthenware body has a tall curved spout, loop handle and fitted lid. Its surface combines stylised flowers, foliage, scrolling linework and geometric borders, finished with extensive gilded detailing around the handle, lid, rim, spout and foot.
Arthur Wood operated at the Bradwell Works in Longport, Staffordshire, a district closely associated with English teapot production. The A.W.L. mark refers to Arthur Wood of Longport, and comparable pattern 1493 wares have been dated to approximately 1904–1928. The decoration reflects the British interpretation of Japanese Imari colours that remained popular in early twentieth-century Staffordshire ceramics.
The teapot is in distressed antique condition. The tip of the lid finial is chipped and incomplete. There is extensive rubbing, fading and loss to the gilding and painted decoration, particularly around the handle, lid, rims and raised edges. Age-related crazing, internal staining, surface marks and wear around the base are also present. No other obvious major cracks or repairs are visible in the supplied photographs. This piece is best suited to decorative display or an established antique teaware collection.
